Australian troops could soon be equipped with a locally developed and transportable laser that is designed to shoot down lethal enemy drones travelling as fast as 100 kilometres per hour.

AIM Defence, creator of Australia’s first laser-based counter-drone system, has been selected by the Canadian Department of National Defence to demonstrate its Fractl high power laser system in an international counter-drone exercise later this year.

Two Australian defence industry firms will compete against 13 other teams from across the world for innovation funding from the Canadian government later this year as a part of its bi-annual counter uncrewed aerial systems sandbox.
